Ifyou’re a world traveler, chances are you’ll feel right at
home at Tranquility. You’ll recognize that the architecture
is inspired by the grandeur of European chateaus. You’ll
see that the hardwood floors you're walking on are reclaimed from
a French manor, while another flooring design echoes that in the
New York Public Library. You’ll remember the cigar lounge from
a visit to the St. Regis in New York City. And you’ll relish the
opportunity to make a grand entrance down the staircase that is a
replica from the S.S. Titanic.
The current owner, the co-founder of the Tommy Hilfiger
Corporation, completed the main residence in 2000; he and his
wife took inspiration from their international travels to design and
furnish the home. It is filled with artifacts and works of art that the
owners have collected from around the world and these, along with
the furnishings, are included in the $100 million asking price.
“At every turn you see something of interest that’s very
unique, very special, that came from a different part of the world,”
says Shari Chase, president and CEO of Chase International, which
is handling the sale of this property. Case in point—look closer at
the fireplace in the billiards room and you’ll see that the side posts
are actually antique ship figureheads. Portuguese tiles dating to the
18th century tiles were incorporated into the sun room.
Tranquility offers unparalleled amenities such as 11 fireplaces,
a 19-seat theater, a wine cellar that can hold 3,200 bottles, garage
space for 16 cars, 9 bedrooms, 14 full baths, 5 half baths and a con-
servatory (accessed by an underground passage from the main resi-
dence) that features a retractable roof, an indoor glass mosaic swim-
ming pool, exercise room and steam rooms.
One of the elements making Tranquility so rare is the 210
acres of land on which it sits. More than 95 percent of Lake Tahoe's
land is owned by either the United States Forest Service or the Bureau
of Land Management; large parcels of land are extremely difficult to
come by. Tranquility is situated in a pine and aspen forest with gar-
dens, forest trails and scenic pathways, as well as stunning views of
Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada.
The property boasts its own private lake, Lake Tranquility,
stocked with brown trout. Arrayed around its shores are a number of
outbuildings, including an Adirondack-style guest residence with nat-
ural rock fireplaces, a boathouse pavilion, an art studio complete with
a ceramic firing room, a stable and a gymnasium with a basketball
court and its own set of uniforms. Additionally, there are two par- 3
golf holes, a 3,500-square-foot golf green and a golf simulator.
All of this acreage means that the lucky owner of this prop-
erty is assured of complete seclusion.
“You’re just five minutes away from being on Lake Tahoe, but
you’re so private that you don’t see anyone else around you, and no
one sees you,” Chase says. “You’re in this forest land that seems like
you’re a million miles away—but you're also very close to world-class
skiing, casino entertainment and summer recreation that's second to
none in Lake Tahoe.”
