Two names, each a luxury brand in themselves,
come together in our No. 3 ultimate home, a 6. 5
acre oceanfront estate in Palm Beach recently
renovated to a new level of refinement by Donald Trump.
Just the Trump name and Palm Beach address make the
property notable, but 575 feet of direct ocean frontage,
timeless architecture, a full complement of accessory build-
ings and opulent finishes promote it to a status as one of
the most significant estates in the world.
“It is the second largest direct oceanfront proper-
ty in Palm Beach, and that in itself is exceptional. Then it
has quite a substantial home on it,” says Cristina Condon,
who is listing the property for Sotheby's International
Realty in Palm Beach.
Comparable to the grand estates of the Gilded Age,
the property is introduced by a dramatic, tiered Italian
fountain and impressive brick motor court. Sculptured,
parterre gardens flanking the terraced entry evoke classic
Palm Beach elegance, an aesthetic that architect Gene
Lawrence has revived throughout with inspired spaces and
a sumptuous palette of prized finishes including onyx floors.
The interior dazzles. An entry gallery with 16-foot
cove ceilings and inlaid granite floors leads to a central
grand salon where tall, arched French doors open to a sun-
splashed conservatory encircling this room as well as the
adjoining library and media room. A long interior art
gallery with high barrel-vaulted skylight transitions to one
of two wings. Originally designed for entertaining,
the home includes a ballroom and oceanside formal
dining room. An octagonal entry foyer leads to an
extensive master suite with a bay-windowed wall
overlooking the ocean.
Throughout the mansion, gems captivate—
such as an onyx bath, hand-painted with Russian
motifs, or a private courtyard off of one of the five
guest suites. A wine bistro lined with oak and
Chicago brick opens to an enchanting private court-
yard with a fountain. But practicality is not ignored:
the property includes a fitness center and a five-plus-
car garage.
One of the best features, according to
Condon, is the untapped potential of the 29,000-
to 30,000-square-foot basement, which has high ceilings. “I can't tell you
how amazing this space is,” she says.“It makes this an ideal house for some-
one who is a collector.”
Echoing the elegant lines of the architecture are gardens and terraces
intermingled with broad swaths of Bermuda lawn leading to sweeping ocean
views. Even the 100-foot, resort-sized pool surrounded by a coquina stone ter-
race seems perfectly in context.
Complementing the main house, which also includes staff quarters, is a
two-bedroom poolside retreat and a two-bedroom guest house. Four addition-
al bedrooms and baths can be found in the circa-1930 coach house.
