Welcome to the 2007 edition of Ultimate Homes. In the three years
we have been doing this magazine, the luxury market has changed
dramatically—as has our Ultimate Homes list. Our first list in 2005
went from $7.8 million to $75 million (for the Three Ponds Farm
Estate in Bridgehampton, N. Y.). In 2007, that same property now
ties for 5th on the list, behind four properties priced at an amazing
$100 million or more). This year’s Ultimate
list goes from a minimum of $10 million to
an astounding $155 million (for the now-
famous Yellowstone Club estate in Bozeman,
Mont., currently the most expensive property
in the world). At a time when such words as
“bubble” and “slowdown” have dominated
real estate headlines, these numbers make it
clear that the high-end is once again off on its own distinctive,
strong path.
That is surely the case in New York, California and Florida,
states that continue to dominate the list year after year. This year,
more than $12 billion in listings came from those three states alone.

These three states also were well represented in our top 12
properties. Collectively, there are more states than ever in this group,
and six new homes made it into those coveted spots in 2007. An
armchair tour of these remarkable homes begins on page 12.
And, finally, while this magazine is focused on U.S. properties,
there are certainly some spectacular homes on the market across
the globe. We visit just a few of them in our international story,
found on page 142.
